Blantyre Water Board (BWB) has once again maintained its top position among organizations complying with the requirements of the Access to Information (ATI) Act. The Board was today, 10th October 2025, awarded a trophy for its outstanding progress in implementation of the regulations of the ATI Act during the commemoration of the International Day for Universal Access to Information, held at Katoto Ground in Mzuzu.

The event, organized by the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC), highlighted the significance of the public’s right to access information as a key pillar of good governance and sustainable development. This year’s global theme, “Empowering Communities Through Digital Literacy: Access to Information for All,” aligns closely with BWB’s continued commitment to enhancing customer engagement and fostering transparency in its operations through digital innovations.

Speaking during the commemoration, the Guest of Honour, a representative of the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Digitalization, Mr. Moses Phiri, said that access to information through digital platforms is vital, as it aligns perfectly with the Malawi 2063 Vision, which aspires for an inclusive, technologically driven and knowledge-based society.

He also commended organizations that are taking implementation of access to information seriously by conducting workshops and awareness sessions aimed at enhancing the flow of information within their institutions.

BWB’s Information Officer, Evelyn Khonje, emphasized that access to information empowers customers to make informed decisions and enhances accountability in service delivery.

“At Blantyre Water Board, we believe that access to information is not just a right; it is a bridge that connects us with our customers. We are committed to providing accurate, timely and relevant information about our services, projects and decisions that affect our valued customers,” said Khonje.

Khonje added that BWB is utilizing digital platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp groups, Instagram, LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter) and the BWB website to enhance information flow and accessibility for customers and the general public. She further stated that the Board has been sensitizing all its staff on the Act and consistently submitting reports to the MHRC.

In 2024, Blantyre Water Board was also recognized with a prestigious award for being the outstanding organization in complying with the requirements of the ATI Act.
