Blantyre Water Board (BWB) has taken a significant step toward strengthening water supply services following the delivery of new pumps and pump spares procured under the Malawi Water and Sanitation Project-1 (MWSP-1), funded by the World Bank.

According to BWB Board Chairperson Counsel Stanley Chirwa, the equipment includes six raw water pumps and pump spares for rehabilitating eight high-lift pumps, which will greatly boost water production capacity at Walkers Ferry Pumping Station.

"Once fully installed and operational, the new pumps will enhance the efficiency and reliability of water supply to customers."

As observed on site, Chirwa noted that the installation process is more complex than initially anticipated. Due to the technical nature of the work involved, installation will extend for another one and a half weeks to ensure that the systems are set up correctly and operate optimally.

The pump installation works have minimal impact on normal operations, as one pump is being installed at a time. This ensures continued service delivery while upgrades are underway.

The new pumps are projected to significantly improve water production to meet the growing demand for water in Blantyre and surrounding areas.

These works are part of a broader effort to deliver a more stable and efficient water supply system.
